Madelyn had surgery this last Tuesday. She had what's called a thyroglossal duct cyst. Basically when the thyroid develops it starts up at the back of your tongue and moves its way down your neck until it's in your lower neck. Occasionally a little piece of it will break off and get stuck along the way. This is what happened to Madelyn. Over time it can fill with infection and swell up. (This is my dummy version of what it is.) It wasn't anything serious but they needed to remove it because it wouldn't go away on it's own, it would just get bigger. So, on Tuesday they went in and removed it. Everything went great. The dr. was fantastic. He is so nice and in addition to being an ENT he is also a plastic surgeon. He is the nicest guy and actually is in our stake. He did an excellent job. We got to bring Madelyn home that day. She was in pain and kinda loopy from the anesthesia and the pain medicine, but she did great. She had a neck wrap on and today (Thursday) we got to take it off. She has been so tough through this whole thing. I'm really proud of her b/c I know how hard it is to recover from a surgery, even if it's a minor one.

I just had to add this picture. Madelyn's dr sent us this pic of the cyst. They also had to remove some bone with it. The cyst went all the way up to her tongue so it was pretty good sized. He said that is was the size of a golf ball. This is just so fascinating to me. He also couldn't believe how tough she is. He asked how long she had to take the rx pain med and I told him for the first 24 hours and then she was on Tylenol and Motrin only. He said he couldn't believe it. Most patients are on them for at least 2-3 days. She really is unbelievably tough!
